The challenge
Beth was passionate about the Oceans and has a real interest in wanting to spread the message about the environmental challenge we are all facing and what we can do to protect this precious resource. She knew she could gain fulfilment and reward from being able to use her skills and knowledge to educate others and bring about real change.
Beth was sure she could develop a career combining her strengths and interests of swimming and reducing ocean pollution and litter but her real challenge was turning this vision into reality.
What we did
Beth joined the Restart Programme in Honiton and began regular coaching sessions, these involved both face to face and telephone consultations. The coaching sessions enabled Beth to explore and discuss her ideas and work out a plan that would enable her to combine her interests of keeping our oceans clean, lifeguarding and her involvement and passion in the mermaid community. Her coach worked with her on applying for relevant jobs and helped her to set up interviews.
The outcome
The coaching sessions and plan of action resulted in Beth securing a new job within the swimming/leisure centre environment as an aqua assistant. Her employer soon recognised her abilities and enthusiasm and agreed to support her through becoming a qualified Lifeguard, which she quickly achieved.
Beth then felt confident to approach her employer with the proposition to use her mermaid persona to raise awareness among visitors to the pool of the oceans and the challenges of pollution and the steps everyone can take to contribute improvement of that environment.
Beth is so happy that her working life now combines all the aspects which are precious to her and is thankful for the support offered to her by Motiv-8 and her work coach on this journey
